Out of the frying pan …

As my husband races pigeons and my first job every morning is to go and give them breakfast (along with the chickens and cats), this story caught my eye when I saw it last week…

In my experience animals aren’t stupid and you may argue that the frying pan was a perfectly sensible place to line and lay an egg – a ready built nest shape.  However, on this occasion the pigeon may have got it wrong … maybe not the best plan for evolution but what an aim!

How's your aim this month? Are you on track to achieve the goals you set out for your business?

Remember, strategic planning is critical to business success. It allows you to develop a clearer understanding of your organisation and what is needed to succeed.  I’ve spent quite a lot of time over the last couple of weeks reviewing the direction of my business and how it’s going to help me achieve my goals.  I’m getting really clear on what I need to aim for and hopefully the results will be a bit more successful than the poor pigeon’s!

Make sure you have a destination, goals and a set of actions to reach these!

I’ve moved the goal posts

I’ve talked before about the importance of knowing your goal so that you are clear about where you’re going and this week I’m going to talk about this again as I’ve had my goal tested over recent weeks and months and it’s failed me.

The good thing is, I know why it failed and I have been able to find the real proper goal that can truly help me focus on what I need to do in my business.  It’s much less glamorous than the goal that failed me but it is a proper test for everything I do.

So why was my goal not good enough?  In a nutshell, I’m not the sort of person who’s ever had absolute certainty about what I’ve wanted to do with my life and I’ve never had ‘one true passion’ in terms of a hobby or a ‘mission’.  I’m more a sort of ‘bobbing along’ type person but I know that if I want to be successful in business I need to be more focused than that.

So for the last year or more I’ve been trying to discover my goal and I thought I had it pretty well nailed … things I wanted to achieve and the lifestyle I wanted to live.  But when push came to shove, those things weren’t a) desired enough or b) specific enough.  I had put arbitrary figures on them because I know I should have them, but they were really there for show and I hadn’t truly bought into them.

What finally brought it all to a head was a few extremely busy months where I had followed the work that had come to me and discovered that whilst in theory everything in the garden was rosy, it wasn’t moving me forward.  It was then that I reassessed why it all seemed to be so wrong when in theory it was all going so well and I realised that what I really needed from my business wasn’t what I was getting.  It was only then that I realised that the fluffy goals I had created are nice to have things that I do intend having one day, but that there was another major goal that I had to achieve in order for any of that to happen.  And with that goal in mind, the work that had come to me wasn’t necessarily the focus of the work I should be doing.

All of a sudden with this revised goal in place, I have a marker by which to measure everything I do and all the work I pursue and consider taking on.  If it isn’t going to take me in the right direction - towards my very clear goal – then I shouldn’t be doing it.

People have told me this is what a goal should be like but it’s only now I have the right goal that I fully understand.

I’m not sure how to tell you to get to this place I’ve found without going through my long and awkward discovery process but I guess having a good coach would be a good place to start.  I can tell you though that when you have the right goal that everything can be measured against you will know and it will make decisions so much easier, so it’s definitely worth hunting for it!
